as gently suggested by reader riyoyukai, my juniper is totally dead, and probably has been for a while. i’m guessing that it wasn’t sheltered enough (at all) outside during winter, or maybe the wiring was too extreme. it got plenty of light, and i was very careful about watering. so it goes. RIP no-name juniper. 

i should change the name of my tumblr to “a bonsai is ritually slaughtered in brooklyn.”
